Yearly competition challenges teams to create with computer vision and artificial intelligence to compete for prizes and international bragging rights.

Palo Alto, Calif., July 27, 2023  /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — OpenCV, the open source non-profit behind the largest library of computer vision algorithms in the world, and Hackster, a community and contest platform popular with technology enthusiasts and creators, are joining forces to host OpenCV AI Competition 2023, continuing the yearly event. Teams worldwide will build Computer Vision and Artificial Intelligence projects in order to compete for over $40,000 in prizes from competition sponsors Khadas and Seeed Studio.

The preliminary submission period for OpenCV AI Competition 2023 is open to all and begins July 5th and runs through August 31st, with submissions being accepted exclusively through the official contest page on the Hackster website. Creators will then have until November 30, 2023 to build their proposed projects. Teams will be featured in a series of YouTube interviews and blog posts during the 3-month build period, with the final winners announced in a live video stream on December 21, 2023.

A panel of industry luminaries will serve as final judges in the competition, deciding who will receive their share of cash and prizes provided by sponsors Khadas and Seeed Studio. The Grand Prize winning teams will receive $5,000 for first place, $3,000 for second place, and $2,000 for third place. The community will be directly involved in prize distribution as well by voting for their favorite projects as part of the Popular Vote which will give another $3,000 in Seeed Studio store coupons to the most-voted-for projects: $500 to the top voted project, $300 for second place, and $200 for third. The top 20 teams in voting will each receive $100 from the same prize pool of Seeed Studio coupons.

Past winners have included a wide variety of projects such as a Lego-based personal companion robot, assistive technology for the visually and mobility impaired, smart agriculture and pest control, and emerging technologies such as Neural Radiance Fields, also known as NeRFs.

The new partnership goes deeper than merely hosting this year’s competition and marks Hackster becoming the Official Community Partner of OpenCV, meaning increased collaboration and cooperation between OpenCV and Hackster beyond this big yearly event.

Hackster CEO Jessica Tangeman said: “Hackster is proud to partner with OpenCV, a trailblazing organization in Computer Vision and AI with over 20 years of history behind it. We have enjoyed watching the OpenCV competitions in the past as a part of the community, and Hackster is excited to grow and foster that community spirit together.”

In recent years OpenCV has run several large competitions (OpenCV AI Competition 2020, 2021, Spatial AI Contest, and 2022), and has given away over $450,000 in prizes to the international community of OpenCV developers, creating dozens of memorable projects, gaining press attention and launching the careers of participants. OpenCV AI Competition 2023 looks to not just continue that streak of successes, but surpass it.

OpenCV CEO Dr. Satya Mallick said: “OpenCV AI Competition is not just a way for people in our community to win prizes from sponsors Khadas and Seeed Studio, but to push themselves to create. We are partnering with the amazing team at Hackster to spread this opportunity and reach beyond what we’ve done before just as we encourage competition participants to do.”

Hackster’s contest platform boasts many useful features and integrations, with individual webpages automatically created for all projects submitted, and facilitating easy communication between participants and contest managers. To date Hackster has hosted global engineering contests for 70,000+ developers and awarded over $1.5 million dollars in prizes.
