The data science company’s patented AI and machine learning technology will deploy through the DOD Space Test Program

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M., Oct. 26, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — RS21, a data science company using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning for secure, autonomous technology solutions for space infrastructure, has been awarded a Phase III Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract from the U.S. Space Force. The two-year contract provides immediate funding to accelerate the maturation of Space Prognostic AI Custodian Ecosystem (SPAICE), the company’s patented AI-powered monitoring system that performs fault detection and prediction to safeguard satellites and the important functions they perform.

SPAICE uses real-time satellite telemetry data and anomaly messages to predict a lead time before satellites fail. It pinpoints issues within the system and subsystem components so ground operators can take preventive actions to keep satellites operational. SPAICE minimizes operating and maintenance costs and maximizes uptime.

“Getting a Phase III contract is a great accomplishment for our team,” said Trisha Miller, director of research and development, National Laboratory and Government Support Services at RS21. “We are optimistic that this ground-breaking AI technology will support government missions and have commercial applications to meet the demand for autonomous solutions for managing the maintenance and longevity of satellite fleets or ground equipment.”

Immediate Phase III SBIR efforts will be focused on RS21’s partnership with the DOD Space Test Program (STP) to deploy SPAICE to the STP watch floor at the Johnson Space Center. The goal is to support the launch, testing, and steady state operations of SPAICE on STP Sat-7, an experimental spacecraft.

In addition, RS21 is also seeking a tactical funding increase (TACFI) from AFWERX to match STP’s funding and increase the total amount for the SBIR contract. Proposed work includes enabling a cloud deployment of SPAICE and integration and analysis of data from the International Space Station (ISS).

Prior to this funding, RS21 was awarded a Phase II SBIR contract from the U.S. Air Force in 2021 and won the Hyperspace Challenge in 2020 for its early-stage technology development.
