Protenus Leadership to Bring Healthcare Cybersecurity Expertise to New America Foundation

Press Releases

Sep 28, 2017

BALTIMORE, Sept. 28, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — Protenus, the health care industry’s most robust, analytics-driven solution for detecting inappropriate activity in the electronic health record, is excited to announce that its Co-Founder and President, Robert Lord, has been selected as a New America Cybersecurity Policy Fellow for the 2017-2018 cohort. This fellowship brings together the world’s top cybersecurity leaders from private industry, academia, journalism, the public sector, and the military to envision and build the future of cybersecurity.

Lord’s efforts will focus on defining and shaping the program’s next-generation efforts in health care cybersecurity, leveraging New America’s global leadership in social policy, technology, security and innovation.  Lord will focus on the intersection of artificial intelligence, health care and cybersecurity, and particularly on how to renew and invigorate trust in health care.

Specifically, Lord will examine the health care cybersecurity and privacy workforce of the future, how artificial intelligence can “bend the curve” in many of cybersecurity’s currently-manual challenges, and the implications of advanced analytics in health care for patients and health systems.

“New America is known for assembling its vast and interdisciplinary network of experts to see the world in entirely new ways,” said Lord. “I’m thrilled to contribute my perspective on behalf of the health care cybersecurity community, as well as learn how health care can benefit from the expertise of fellows from other industries.  I am sure it will be a great opportunity to learn and grow for all of us.”

The fellowship builds on Lord’s recognized work in shaping and framing the modern health care cybersecurity market, and the evolution in the field catalyzed by his team’s work at Protenus, particularly in the privacy monitoring space, which has embraced the new paradigm represented by Protenus’ technology.

“Over the past three years, our Fellows have been central to our mission to bring new, fresh, and diverse issues and voices to the cybersecurity policy conversation. These fellows are already doing very remarkable work in areas as diverse as workforce development, health care, national security strategy, and secure incorporation of future technologies. The group of Fellows that we are introducing today builds on that tradition. We look forward to working with them and supporting their work,” notes Ian Wallace, co-chair of the Cybersecurity Policy Fellows Program.

Lord is a sought-after speaker and commentator in the fields of artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, health care analytics, and data privacy. He has been invited to speak at premier industry conferences like the HIMSS17 National Conference, to brief at the U.S. Senate, and to provide insight to national, state, and local leaders on cybersecurity preparedness.  His insights have been featured in The Wall Street Journal, The Hill, Forbes, The Baltimore Sun, and a wide array of other publications.

Robert is a Fellow at the Institute for Critical Infrastructure Technology and teaches courses on entrepreneurship at Johns Hopkins. He has been named to the Baltimore Business Journal’s “Tech 10” and to Becker’s Hospital Review’s “Healthcare Entrepreneurs to Know.”

Before co-founding Protenus, Robert was an MD candidate at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Robert received his A.B. in Social Studies, magna cum laude, from Harvard University.
