The SPAICE AI-powered system for predictive satellite failure and diagnostics is available through the DoD’s digital environment of readily awardable technology solutions

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M., July 18, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — RS21, a data science company and Inc. 5000 fastest-growing company three years in a row, announced that its AI-powered SPAICE resiliency tool for predictive satellite failure and diagnostics has been accepted into the Tradewind Solutions Marketplace (Marketplace). The Marketplace enables the Department of Defense (DoD) to procure technologies and services non-competitively or sole source.

Charles Rath, President and CEO of RS21, explained that the Marketplace provides an opportunity for RS21 to expand its footprint by offering AI and machine learning solutions directly to DoD organizations. “The DoD is actively seeking predictive maintenance and situational awareness solutions,” he said. “Now the DoD can procure our SPAICE resiliency tool without having to go through a lengthy, competitive procurement process.”

The Tradewind Solutions Marketplace is the DoD’s digital environment of post-competition, readily awardable, technology solution pitch videos. One of the goals of the Marketplace is to streamline the rapid procurement and delivery of artificial intelligence capabilities and solutions by providing a venue for DoD organizations to easily search, view, and acquire solutions, products, and services.

Rath highlighted the significance of RS21’s product being accepted into the Marketplace on the first attempt. “SPAICE, our first submission to the Marketplace, made it through the rigorous assessment process on the first try, which is uncommon and indicative of its value and suitability to address this problem space.”

SPAICE, or the Space Prognostic AI Custodian Ecosystem, predicts satellite safe mode entries before they happen, enabling engineers and operators to intervene in advance of failures. Based on survival analysis, a technique pioneered in precision oncology, the AI-powered monitoring system uses satellite telemetry data and anomaly messages to surface issues within satellite systems and subsystem components and predict a time to failure (TTF) window. Currently, satellite failures result in costly downtime, service interruptions and, in some cases, contribute to the growing problem of space debris.

Beyond its space application, RS21 is actively extending the methodology to apply to other large infrastructure and assets in the DoD, like aircraft and ships.

RS21 is currently operationalizing SPAICE with the DoD Space Test Program (STP). The company has received $1.5 million in funding for the research and development of SPAICE through Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grants. The U.S. Air Force awarded SPAICE a direct to Phase II SBIR with follow-on from the U.S. Space Force through a Phase III SBIR. Prior to its SBIR contracts, RS21 won the AFRL Hyperspace Challenge in 2020 for its early-stage technology development.
