LOS ANGELES, Dec. 9, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Top-rated plant care app, Greg, today released a major new version called PlantVision that allows users to instantly identify their plants and see key information at a glance. Originally launched in 2020 with the mission of creating the smartest plant care app, Greg’s new version continues to deliver on that promise, with groundbreaking technology that makes the most of recent advancements in phone hardware, software and artificial intelligence. With this new update, plant identification is only a tap away: in a plant store, at home, in your backyard or even on a hike. Users can scan their potted plants to get automatic measurements for their plant’s pot size, along with distance to the nearest window and window orientation – which are key factors in plant care.

Today, when people want to learn more information about a plant such as its species or care details, there are very few good ways to do so: plant tags have limited space, it is hard to know what to search for online and any available care advice is generic.

Greg’s update solves these problems through a quick and simple plant scanning experience that instantly displays the plant’s species and information, with a one-tap option to add that plant to a smart care schedule. This feature builds on top of Greg’s existing plant care capabilities, which include fully personalized care recommendations for any plant based on its species, pot size, and location; a vibrant user community that helps with troubleshooting and inspiration; and detailed care guides with information for 30,000 plant species.

Creating the PlantVision update required extensive research and development along with technological expertise. It uses a combination of three machine learning models developed by the Greg team: a plant species classifier, an object detection model to recognize and measure plants and an indoor/outdoor scene classifier. PlantVision also uses AR to provide users with real-time information about the plants it detects. These models are combined into a real-time engine that ensures smooth performance across a wide range of devices and use-cases.

“We are very excited to share this significant update with our community after a full year of focused R&D efforts,” says Alex Ross, Greg’s CEO. “PlantVision is an unprecedented user experience in our industry, while also presenting one of the most compelling use-cases anywhere for augmented reality and advanced smartphone hardware.”
