CVAT, Industry-Leading Open Data Annotation Platform, Joins OpenCV

Press Releases

Jul 26, 2022

CVAT contains powerful features which are often reserved for closed-source, proprietary, systems. Designed for ease-of–use, it is recognized in the AI industry as one of the fastest and most usable tools for data annotation. It’s trusted by hundreds of thousands of developers and thousands of companies worldwide.

PALO ALTO, Calif., July 26, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — CVAT, the Computer Vision Annotation Tool, and OpenCV.AI, the consulting arm of the world’s biggest computer vision library, are pleased to announce the launch of their best-in-class open data annotation platform at CVAT.ai and the relocation of active CVAT development to a new repository managed by the core CVAT team.

Annotation tools such as CVAT are essential to modern artificial intelligence (AI) workflows, and are used to create, train, and refine image data for machine learning use cases such as object detection, recognition, tracking, and semantic segmentation. These methods have become an integral part of security systems, Hollywood visual effects processes, medical imaging, agriculture and a host of other industries and professions.

In a short time CVAT has become an industry leader in the quickly-growing artificial intelligence tools space, attracting nearly 1 million downloads since February 2021 according to Docker.com, and over 7,600 stars on the original Github repository at the time of writing.

CVAT, an open source tool, contains powerful features which are often reserved for closed-source, proprietary, systems. Designed for ease-of–use and speed, CVAT is recognized in the AI industry as not just one of the fastest but also one of the most usable tools for data annotation. The user interface, keybindings, and visual organization are routinely called out among the best in the industry.

Similar to OpenCV’s original version over 20 years ago, the CVAT project began at Intel. The projects share that common lineage, but also a sharp focus on serving the needs of their global communities through the power of Open Source.

Gary Bradski, President of OpenCV, said:

“Like OpenCV, CVAT has grown organically through the community. In computer vision and AI data is everything. Without the right data, none of the current or future of AI is possible. CVAT is the best data annotation tool around, and we’re proud to have them with us at OpenCV.AI.”

Nikita Manovich, Chief Architect of CVAT, said:
“Intel is a known incubator of great talents and awesome projects, but now it is time to turn the page and start a new adventure for our team. My vision is that CVAT will be the dominant open data platform to serve the AI community. Even though we are moving on our mission remains to help developers, companies and organizations around the world to solve real problems using the Data-centric AI approach.”

The OpenCV.AI ecosystem now includes data annotation with CVAT, and the machine learning model marketplace with Modelplace.AI, in addition to consulting from a world-class team of over 45 experienced professionals from around the globe.

Though there are plans for paid offerings via the official platform at CVAT.ai, where users can sign up and use the tool for free, the project is and will remain Free, Open Source, Software (FOSS) available to anyone in the community. Developers can find the new CVAT repository at https://github.com/cvat-ai/cvat. Fans are encouraged to support the project on Product Hunt.

About CVAT
In 2016 the team began work on an internal tool for video annotation at Intel. Over a few years, based on the direct feedback and collaboration with other internal teams, the user interface and backend systems were totally reimplemented and became beloved by these first users.

This new tool, now named Computer Vision Annotation Tool (CVAT), was finally published publicly on June 29, 2018 and has become a popular and mature open source product which is used by tens of thousands of users and companies around the world. In 2022 CVAT joined with OpenCV.AI.

About OpenCV.AI
In 2000, we created OpenCV, a free Сomputer Vision software library. It’s the biggest CV library in the world used in thousands of companies, products, and devices – tested for scalability and performance every single day.

OpenCV.AI now puts our multi-decade expertise to tailor high-quality algorithms and systems and ship them worldwide. A part of OpenCV.AI’s revenue goes to the OpenCV Foundation to support library development, courseware and documentation.
