CAF America, a nonprofit leader in international grantmaking with a network of more than 380,000 organizations in 135 countries, today announced Char Mollison as Chair of the CAF America Board. Last Thursday, donors and philanthropic leaders from around the world gathered in New York City to celebrate the organization’s 30th anniversary.

“Char steps into her new role at a pivotal time in CAF America’s history; with 30 years of cross-border giving under our belt and reaching the milestone of granting over $2.5 billion in donor funds since the beginning of our organization, her leadership is going to position us for record successes in our next 30 years,” said Ted Hart, CAF America President and CEO. “Her insights, vision, and proven track record will help us to mobilize the tremendous resources needed to generate enduring, positive social impact in communities around the world.”

Mollison succeeds Rob Buchanan, who has served as CAF America’s Chair since 2013. Under Buchanan’s leadership, CAF America created its second subsidiary organization, CAF Canada, and granted more than $1.3 billion in charitable contributions.

“I could not be more proud of my tenure as Board Chair and could not think of a better person to hand over the reins to than Char,” said Rob Buchanan, outgoing CAF America Board Chair. “We have accomplished so much together during my time on the Board and I know she is the best person to continue CAF America’s stellar legacy of giving.”

Previously, Mollison served as CAF America’s Board Secretary, having first joined the board in 2013. She has over 35 years of experience managing and advising nonprofit organizations, including 17 years in senior positions at the Council on Foundations, an association of grantmakers, and at Independent Sector, a coalition of nonprofits and philanthropies. She has been teaching graduate courses in nonprofit management since 1997 and is currently Senior Fellow of the Center on Nonprofits, Philanthropy and Social Enterprise at George Mason University. She is also a Fellow of the Salzburg Global Seminar on the subject of nongovernmental organizations and civil society and has advised government officials, nonprofit executives and boards in the U.S. and abroad, including Eastern and Central Europe, Latin America, China, Central Asia, Bangladesh and Africa. Her early career includes advocacy for women’s rights in economic policy, sports and the military.

“I am humbled to take on the role of Chair at a time when so many communities, and the organizations that serve them, are feeling the profound social and economic effects from the pandemic, war, natural disasters and human rights violations,” said Char Mollison. “Our mission is to facilitate global grantmaking, and we pledge to do everything we can to serve those donors and charitable partners whose humanitarian purposes move us towards the goal of a fair and sustainable future for all.”

In addition to celebrating CAF America’s 30th Anniversary and Mollison’s new position at last week’s celebration, the organization also unveiled the opening of a new office in New York City that will focus on growing the work of the CAF American Donor Fund, an innovative giving vehicle for donors who file tax returns in both the US and the UK. Founded by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) Group, since 2012, CAF America has grown more than 600% and now oversees more than $600 million in annual charitable contributions and has granted more than $2.5 billion dollars throughout the United States and in 135 countries around the world.
