After 23 years as a prosecutor, District of South Carolina Criminal Chief Opens Federal Defense practice
MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (March 15, 2022) – Nathan S. Williams, former Criminal Chief at the United States Attorney’s Office in South Carolina, and prosecutor of the death penalty case against Charleston church shooter Dylann Roof, has left the United States Attorney’s Office to start his own boutique law firm focusing on white-collar defense work.
In his time with the South Carolina U.S. Attorney’s Office Williams prosecuted some of South Carolina’s most high-profile cases. They include:
- The 2015 investigation and prosecution of Dylann Roof, who murdered nine parishioners during a bible study at Charleston, South Carolina’s Mother Emanuel AME church, because of their race. Roof was sentenced to death in 2017.
- The 2014 prosecution of banker Chris Latham and his mistress, Wendy Moore, who attempted to have Latham’s wife killed. The investigation and prosecution were featured on Dateline NBC and Crime Watch Daily.
- The 2015 prosecution of Dorothy Barnett for the abduction of her 10-month-old daughter 20 years earlier. The case was featured on Dateline NBC and CBS 48 Hours.
- The 2019 death penalty case against Brandon Council, for the execution of two CresCom bank employees during a daylight robbery in Conway, SC.
In the last seven years there have been four federal death penalty cases resulting in a death verdict, and Williams has tried two of them. In the District of South Carolina three federal cases have resulted in death sentences, and Williams tried two of them.
Williams will now focus his energy on federal white-collar and corporate defense. Explaining the move, Williams said “for decades I prosecuted complex cases on the federal level. I saw along the way that defending these cases could be more challenging than prosecuting them. I look forward to developing strategies and approaches to help individuals and companies being federally investigated avoid charges. And for those who have already been charged, I am excited to ensure they receive the best results possible.” His firm is located at 260 W. Coleman Blvd., Ste B, Mt. Pleasant, SC, 29464 and www.scfederaldefense.com.
