DALLAS, (January 25, 2022) – Taylor Productions and E-Motion Films, a Dallas, Texas-based production company, released an official trailer for the upcoming documentary “Red Alert: The Fight Against Fibroids.”
The powerful, personal, and thought-provoking 90-minute film focuses on the history, research, and multiple effects of uterine fibroids, which are benign tumors of the uterus and extremely common among African American women.
The documentary is the directorial debut of Erica L.Taylor, owner of Taylor Productions, who began film production as a result of the filmmaker’s own experience with fibroids. The film chronicles Taylor’s journey with fibroids over several years; a path that had led her to the intensive care unit.
At its halfway point in production, Taylor is currently seeking additional funding for completion and post-production. Donations are tax deductible through a fiscal sponsor, Her Nexx Chapter, a 501(c)3 nonprofit.
“After a decade of fighting fibroids and invasive surgeries,” says Taylor, who has been a television, radio, podcast, and film producer for nearly 20 years. “I knew it was time to ring the alarm on this alarming yet common issue, especially after discovering the millions of women-especially black women, who are suffering from the symptoms.”
After producing her first film, “The Invisible Vegan (2019),” which introduced the link between meat consumption and uterine fibroids, women reached out to Taylor via social media, thanking her for shedding light on the subject. Taylor often promotes awareness about treatment options and the benefits of a soy-free, vegan/vegetarian lifestyle for women with reproductive health issues.
In an unique approach, “Red Alert,” will amplify the voices of women whose lives have been interrupted by fibroids, including reality stars, Cynthia Bailey (“Real Housewives of Atlanta”) and Shay Johnson (“Love and Hip Hop Miami”). Red Alert plans will feature art works by renowned artists such as Elizabeth Catlett, Romare Bearden, Faith Ringgold and Niki de Saint Phalle to help illustrate the narrative. Grammy-award winning musician Leon Lacey will compose and perform the documentary soundtrack.
Uterine fibroids often grow in multiples and can cause severe anemia, infertility, miscarriage, painful sexual intercourse, weight gain, inflammation, heavy bleeding, and hormonal imbalance for decades of a woman’s life. While 70% of women have fibroids, 80% of black women will be diagnosed with fibroids earlier in life and suffer from the symptoms. Alarmingly, over 60% of those women will receive an unnecessary hysterectomy due to fibroid related issues, according to the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.
Early supporters of the project, include the USA Fibroid Centers, The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and research scientists from Northwestern University and the University of Chicago Medicine.
