MCA, in short for monochloroacetic acid, is the industrial name for chloroacetic acid, an organochlorine compound with the formula ClCH2CO2H. Prepared for the first time in a crude manner by the chlorinating of acetic acid in the presence of sunlight, the carboxylic acid is a useful building block in organic synthesis. In large scale applications, MCA is used in the preparation of the thickening agent carboxymethyl cellulose and carboxymethyl starch. It is also used in the production of household and industrial use products such as herbicides, pesticides as well as in plastics, pharmaceuticals, flavours, cosmetics, and other organic chemicals.
One method of industrial preparation of this compound is a similar process involving the chlorination of acetic acid but using acetic anhydride as the catalyst. This process, however, produces impurities such as dichloroacetic acid and trichloroacetic acid which are had to separate by distillation too. The high quantities of HCl also produced makes this a popular choice. The other commonly preferred method is the hydrolysis of trichloroethylene which gives a highly pure product. The vast applications that this industrial-grade chemical find makes MCA a viable product.
