Washington, D.C. (October 14, 2020) — Oppenheim + Zebrak, LLP (“O+Z”), has opened an office in New York City and hired as partner New York-based attorney Alexander Kaplan. Alex is a highly experienced intellectual property (IP) lawyer who for two decades has represented some of the most notable companies and artists in copyright and trademark litigation.

The addition of Alex as a partner and the new outpost in New York will allow O+Z’s nationwide IP litigation practice to continue the impressive growth and client successes the firm has enjoyed over the past several years. That has included winning a $1 billion jury verdict for the music industry against one of the nation’s largest ISPs, Cox Communications, naming two new partners in DC, Michele Murphy and Jeff Gould, and representing several major book publishers in a high-profile copyright case against Internet Archive, among many other active and important matters.

Alex joins O+Z from Proskauer Rose LLP, where Alex was a partner with 20 years of experience litigating complex cases in copyright, trademark, advertising, right of publicity and trade secrets law, as well as in other complex commercial disputes. He has won copyright infringement cases for performing artists such as Madonna, Lady Gaga and U2; major record labels and music publishers; and leading media and publishing companies. Alex has also successfully represented many clients in trademark and false advertising disputes in various industries, including consumer products, food and beverage, fashion, and sports and entertainment, to name a few.

“With our deep client base in the New York area, opening an office in the city is a natural outgrowth of our firm’s mission: to achieve the best results for our clients and to align our interests and incentives with them as well,” said managing partner Matt Oppenheim.

“Alex’s extensive experience in intellectual property litigation, his dedication to his clients, and his winning record made him an ideal choice for O+Z, and we’re thrilled to have him join our talented team of experienced attorneys,” said founding partner Scott Zebrak.

“I have long admired the singular focus, deep expertise and remarkable successes O+Z bring to their clients, some of whom we have served together, and I am delighted to join the stellar team the firm has put together over the years,” said Kaplan. “As a partner based in New York, I am committed to bringing my skillset to bear in helping the firm continue its extraordinary winning streak and growth for years to come.”

Alex has been recognized by international legal rankings agency The Legal 500 United States for his work in the practice areas of Copyright (2016-2019), Marketing & Advertising (2017-2019), Media & Entertainment (2018-2019), Trademarks: Litigation (2019), and Media, Technology, and Telecoms: Media & Entertainment Litigation (2019). Alex also was named an Acritas Star Lawyer in 2020.
