KNOXVILLE, Tenn., Nov. 9, 2018 /PRNewswire-iReach/ — Lirio announced today that Chris Symons, Ph.D., a machine learning expert who spent the last 15 years in key data science and machine learning leadership roles at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), has joined Lirio as Head of Machine Learning.

Previously, Symons was a senior research staff member in the Computer Science and Mathematics Division at ORNL, where he served as the head of division’s science council. He collaborated with other researchers as data science and machine learning lead on a wide variety of projects and was a member of the ORNL Artificial Intelligence Leadership Team.

Symons has published numerous research papers and won several awards in recognition of his work. Among his contributions are research and application of machine learning tools for text analysis/natural language processing, knowledge discovery and management, and semi-supervised learning. His work has been applied to initiatives involving cybersecurity, breast cancer, and various other subjects.

Symons received his doctorate in computer engineering from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, with a dissertation focused on high-dimensional data analysis via advanced machine learning techniques. He is an adjunct faculty member of data science with UTK’s The Bredesen Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Graduate Education.
