FREMONT, Calif., Oct. 25, 2018 /PRNewswire/ — When seconds count, securing a sprawling urban campus against the danger of an active shooter is the prime security concern for its campus police department. San Jose State University Police Department’s decision to add state-of-the-art video and acoustic gunshot surveillance to aid its dedicated police force led to V5 Systems winning a 2018 Campus Safety BEST Award in recognition of its V5 Acoustic Gunshot Sensor with Video (V5 GSL) the Silicon Valley company’s acclaimed, self-powered outdoor security solution.

The SJSU University Police Department gathering real-time information via the V5 App, designed for mobile and easy-to-access situational awareness.

This is V5 Systems’ 18th award in two years and marks the 3rd win this year for the V5 GSL.

Sponsored by Campus Safety Magazine, a premier publication for administrators and security professionals who seek to make their campuses safe learning environments, the winners of the 2018 Campus Safety BEST Awards are recognized for their superlative protection, emergency management, and safety solutions for schools and universities. An independent panel of judges, along with the editors of Campus Safety, consider innovation, functionality and benefits to the installer.

Each V5 Systems’ self-powered (combination of propriety solar, battery and power management system) outdoor security unit can be deployed and moved in under 30 minutes to quickly extend intelligent surveillance in areas without easy access to fixed power and connectivity. It can also be used for dynamic, temporary crowd control related to large campus sporting events, festivals and outdoor concerts.

Portable and wireless, the V5 GSL units employ numerous technological advantages to quickly localize any source of gunfire:

  • Multi-sensor Approach: Acoustic and camera sensors with HD video gives police virtual eyes and ears for situational awareness, several critical pieces of information when they’re on their way to a crime scene as well as evidentiary data.
  • AI-driven Accuracy and Edge Computing: Filters out false alerts and relays alerts in real time directly to officers.
  • Rapid Relocation: Each V5 GSL unit weighs just 25 pounds, allowing for quick deployment and repositioning to create a virtual dragnet.

With 30 full-time police officers tasked with providing safety for more than 33,000 faculty, students and staff across the 19-acre open SJSU campus in the heart of the tenth-largest city in America, the University Police Department needed to anticipate, monitor and react to dangerous situations in real-time, especially with high foot traffic from the surrounding downtown area.

V5 Systems innovative technology enabled SJSU PD to avoid paying over $1 million in infrastructure-related trenching costs and third-party gunshot monitoring.

As crime hot-spots shift on campus, SJSU PD now has the flexibility to redeploy its units accordingly. SJSU PD can monitor and respond to rapidly changing conditions, such as tracking simultaneous disturbances across the university grounds using the multi-sensor array until officers can intercede. The artificial intelligence-driven software results in fewer false positives as these units gain experience in their environments, acting as a force multiplier and providing real-time insight during a crisis.

“We’re very proud to receive this honor from Campus Safety Magazine,” said V5 Systems’ CEO, Steve Yung. “It’s especially meaningful in that this award recognizes a multi-sensor approach – with both video and acoustic sensors – to protect our future generation of students on campuses throughout the country.  In addition to cutting-edge technology to back up trained, manned forces, we want every outdoor security solution we design to be quick to deploy, so that private and public campus administrators can count on it to be flexible enough to meet changing environments, threats and budgets.”
