Alegion Singled Out for Its Prowess in Facilitating Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning, Most Recently by the Huffington Post
Oct 19, 2017
AUSTIN, Texas, Oct. 19, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — Austin-based Alegion, a human intelligence platform for AI and machine learning initiatives, is getting plenty of attention from experts in the field, most recently by a Huffington Post columnist, who singled out the company in an article entitled “The Springtime of Artificial Intelligence” – http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/the-springtime-of-artificial-intelligence_us_59d195bbe4b034ae778d4be1.
The columnist writes about the importance of data:
“The misconception persists that AI and machine learning can evolve and mature without human involvement. They are, nonetheless, dependent upon the quality of data for performance of various tasks, and data must be parsed and cleaned and tagged, dupes removed, and the datasets turned into a ‘ground truth’ by human hands. In fact, lacking clean data, algorithms cannot learn and neither AI nor ML can effectively perform tasks.”
He goes on to quote Alegion CEO Nathaniel Gates about the quandary that businesses face, regarding the explosion of data, if they want to take on AI/ML initiatives.
“Businesses now have big aggregated datasets from many systems,” he told the Huffington Post. “And they’re using algorithms to try to make heads or tails of it. The vast majority of data is not in a state where machine learning and AI can produce good quality work from it. We clean up inconsistencies and dupes and often add a metadata layer so computers can be efficient with their algorithms. Most of what we are doing is applying our ‘crowd’ to go through at a very large scale and clean up data and add labels so AI initiatives can be applied.”
The article sees a niche for companies like Alegion, quoting Jeff Houston, C.F.A. and an analyst for Navidar, who said “everything … is built on quality data, and there is no foreseeable way that machine learning or AI can clean its own data.”
This is not the first time Alegion has risen above the radar.
Last month, in an insightful piece entitled “The Future of AI Depends on a Huge Workforce of Human Teachers” that appeared in Businessweek Magazine, a journalist identified Alegion as one of the companies harnessing the crowd for AI and Machine Learning initiatives.
