1. What was your role prior to coming to Benefits Science Technologies?
A: I worked as an actuarial consultant for two of the world’s largest insurance brokerage firms, Aon Hewitt and most recently Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. In those roles I helped Fortune 500 and Global 500 partner accounts manage their employer benefits. In particular, my focus has been on developing and implementing cost reduction strategies which go beyond simple cost shifting from the employer’s budget to the member’s pocket.

2. What were the biggest challenges you faced in those roles?
A: The cost pressure of health trend continues to climb, rates remain well above inflation and economic growth. Although that growth has slowed some in recent years, it continues to compound pressure on the bottom line across the whole economy. The issues are well known: broader economic drivers like an aging population, social and lifestyle changes and general inflation, combined with market consolidation, costly innovation to deliver personalized care for an ever-sickening population, rising drug spending, government regulation, and new payment models. To further compound the problem there are growing incidents of more sophisticated fraud, waste and abuse. It’s no surprise then that plan owners are overwhelmed. It’s a big deal – for most companies’ healthcare represents a tremendous expenditure to their business.

And while all of this is occurring, many families report that they can’t afford the paycheck deductions and out-of-pocket costs they’re paying today. Many members don’t believe that their healthcare is well managed, and they are not feeling healthier. Unique Spatio-Temporal Big Data Needs ‘Special AI Algorithms’

Zheng said that the urban perception & data acquisition process is facing lots of challenges, including acquiring more data with limited resources; insufficient data due to the extreme lack of sensors in cities; and serious data loss issue due to faulty sensors or other factors.

To address these challenges, Zheng proposed to unify different types of data in urban spaces, such as crowd flow data, traffic flow, air quality, weather data and social media data into unified spatial-temporal data types, and then optimize the management of those data utilizing multiple specially designed spatial-temporal indexes. Zheng gave an example of how these techniques help with detecting parking violations by mining the massive trajectory data of shared bicycles.

City Operation Systems Enables Future Intelligent Cities

When talking about the layer of data-driven analysis in cities, Zheng emphasized that the structure of spatio-temporal data is different from simple text and image data. A photo is static in size and is not time varying, however, the trajectory of a vehicle is constantly changing, and two points in the trajectory cannot be exchanged. Using regional crowd flow forecasting problem as an example, a large event occur, new AI models developed by JD Intelligent City Research can accurately predict the human crowd or traffic flow in time period. This has significant value to urban administrative authorities.

The analysis of spatio-temporal data is not accurate enough without synergizing with the big data from different sectors. In a mega city, for instance, air quality might be quite different across different areas even at the same time. Zheng believes that to forecast the air quality of a location in a city, we have to fuse the information in the data from many fields, such as weather, traffic, people movement, points of interest, traffic network, historical air quality data and real-time air quality reports, and domain knowledge in meteorology and environmental science, in order to produce an effective prediction model.

For aspect of providing services in urban computing, he used the urban computing platform as an example. ‘An urban computing platform, just like the IOS, can build a city-level ‘operating system’ for a smart city,’ he said. ‘It’s aimed to assist municipal administrations in tackling data problems in sectors like transportation, planning, environmental protection, energy, urban credit, public security and e-government, and enable partners in various industries with AI algorithms to build an ecosystem for intelligent city development.’

Call For Papers Opens For Cable-Tec Expo® Fall Technical Forum; Abstracts Due March 22 For Premier Cable Event In The Americas

EXTON, Pa., Feb. 1, 2019 /PRNewswire/ — Thought leadership and expertise on new and emerging technologies and operational practices that can position cable at the heart of telecommunications transformation are being sought for the annual Fall Technical Forum at SCTE•ISBE Cable-Tec Expo® 2019.

The Expo 2019 Call for Papers seeks proposals in 11 categories covering a wide range of topics, among them the industry’s roadmap to 10G services, as well as other technologies that will impact cable infrastructures and services in the next several years. Abstracts will be reviewed by the Expo 2019 Program Committee, co-chaired by Bill Warga, vice president, Technology for Liberty Global, and Tom Adams, executive vice president, Field Operations for Charter Communications.

Proposals are due by Friday, March 22, 2019.

Selected papers will be presented at Cable-Tec Expo from Monday through Thursday, Sept. 30–Oct. 3 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, in New Orleans. Additionally, the papers will be published as part of the industry’s archival body of technical literature, the Fall Technical Forum Technical Proceedings.
