An interview with Neil Larson, Chief Strategy Officer of Benefits Science Technologies.

BOSTON, Feb. 3, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Benefits Science Technologies (BST) provides data analytics software/analysis to employers and consultants to help manage the risk of self-funded health plans. The firm improves connection to data, empowers optimal decisions to control costs, and improves quality of care for plan members. Founded in 2012, BST is recognized as a world leading research and applied science team, applying advanced analytics and Robust Optimization to complex health insurance decisions.

Neil Larson, Chief Strategy Officer, with a background in actuarial projections, budgeting, claims analysis, data warehousing, and health insurance is leading efforts to help clients adopt these powerful new capabilities.

1. What was your role prior to coming to Benefits Science Technologies?
A: I worked as an actuarial consultant for two of the world’s largest insurance brokerage firms, Aon Hewitt and most recently Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. In those roles I helped Fortune 500 and Global 500 partner accounts manage their employer benefits. In particular, my focus has been on developing and implementing cost reduction strategies which go beyond simple cost shifting from the employer’s budget to the member’s pocket.

2. What were the biggest challenges you faced in those roles?
A: The cost pressure of health trend continues to climb, rates remain well above inflation and economic growth. Although that growth has slowed some in recent years, it continues to compound pressure on the bottom line across the whole economy. The issues are well known: broader economic drivers like an aging population, social and lifestyle changes and general inflation, combined with market consolidation, costly innovation to deliver personalized care for an ever-sickening population, rising drug spending, government regulation, and new payment models. To further compound the problem there are growing incidents of more sophisticated fraud, waste and abuse. It’s no surprise then that plan owners are overwhelmed. It’s a big deal – for most companies’ healthcare represents a tremendous expenditure to their business.

And while all of this is occurring, many families report that they can’t afford the paycheck deductions and out-of-pocket costs they’re paying today. Many members don’t believe that their healthcare is well managed, and they are not feeling healthier. There is room for improvement on multiple fronts and it starts with having timely, actionable insights to inform better healthcare decisions.

3. And what is your role at Benefits Science Technologies?
A: My priority is a hyper focus on what matters to the primary end-users, employers and their consultants, who are working overtime to build smart cost-containment and improve quality of care decisions. Ultimately, we’re working to design health plans that are efficient and sustainable for the long term. I help clients leverage BST’s advanced toolsets so they can translate an increasingly complex data environment into timely answers that plan managers and owners can use to improve their plan and their bottom line. Today, we get more insights, faster and it’s so much easier.

4. So, you left one of the largest players in the space to work with an early-stage analytics company, why?
A: I wanted to be a part of the next generation innovation in the healthcare decision space. I’ve seen first-hand the difficulty of extracting meaningful answers from volumes of data. It’s a challenge that extends across the market – plan owners, consultants, providers – everyone is looking for help to solve very complex problems.

Our Chief Data Scientist, Dr. Dimitris Bertsimas is an early pioneer in healthcare analytics (he helped co-found D2Hawkeye in the early 2000’s) and is recognized as leader in the field. As a 30-year professor, and head of the Operations Research Center at MIT, he has assembled some of the best and brightest intellectual talent in the world to lead a mission to improve healthcare and control costs. I believe that BST is better aligned to solve those complex issues than anyone in the market and I am excited to be a part of this team.

5. How does BST differ from other healthcare analytics solutions in the market?
A: More than canned software, we provide customized problem solving. Our team of Ph.D. Data Scientists leverage modern methods of data science combined with our own innovations in advanced analytics, machine learning and Interpretable Artificial Intelligence (IAI) to describe what is happening inside a plan, predict what is likely to occur next and prescribe action to improve outcomes.

These powerful capabilities far exceed traditional methods, enabling optimal plan configuration while obeying the overall premium, business quality and other plan owner specified criteria. We sort through massive data sets quickly, considering millions of scenarios to remove unforeseen inefficiencies and eliminate less favorable options. Our Plan Optimizer prescribes specific action to meet the financial and quality objectives of the plan. We don’t simply improve health care plans, we optimize them. Big difference.

The result: Our clients understand their options in a broad and dynamic world of choices. They improve their ability to track performance, measure ROI and understand cost impact of plan decisions. And because we eliminate a tedious manual process, it reduces the time required to get actionable intelligence. Now they can apply the same level of research and problem-solving attention to their small/mid-sized self-funded clients as they would their jumbo accounts.

6. What do you see as the future of healthcare analytics?
A: It’s happening before our eyes. Advancements in computational processing are enabling more sophisticated algorithms to produce more insights, more accurately, and faster than ever before. Increasingly organizations will apply these advanced techniques to better align their plan design with what is happening inside their plan. That visibility will improve their understanding of their risk and help them better serve their populations while managing costs.

And it will continue to get better. Our team has developed several significant innovations within the last year, such as our Interpretable Clustering via Optimal Trees (ICOT), which builds upon the algorithm of Optimal Classification Trees. It’s an exciting time to be in the industry. The employers and their trusted advisors who manage the risk of self-funded health plans have a whole new world of tools at their disposal – and given the challenges they face, it’s just in time.

JD iCity Makes A Successful Appearance at AAAI 2019

BEIJING, Feb. 3, 2019 /PRNewswire/ — At the AAAI 2019 conference held in Hawaii, JD iCity drew attention by demonstrating how they combined advanced multi-source data fusion techniques with spatio-temporal data-driven models for addressing urban problems in traffic, environment protection, energy consumption and other areas with knowledge mined from data.

AAAI is the leading conference in the field of artificial intelligence, Dr. Yu Zheng, Vice President of JD.COM and the Chief Data Scientist of JD Digits, also serves as the managing director of JD Intelligent City Research, gave the keynote speech, ‘Urban Computing: Building Intelligent Cities Using Big Data and AI.’ As a proponent of the concept of urban computing. He wrote the book ‘Urban Computing’ recently, published by the MIT Press. This is the world’s first authoritative book in the field of urban computing.

In his keynote speech, Zheng explained that the concept of urban computing includes urban perception & data acquisition, big data management, data-driven analysis and services provided.

Unique Spatio-Temporal Big Data Needs ‘Special AI Algorithms’

Zheng said that the urban perception & data acquisition process is facing lots of challenges, including acquiring more data with limited resources; insufficient data due to the extreme lack of sensors in cities; and serious data loss issue due to faulty sensors or other factors.

To address these challenges, Zheng proposed to unify different types of data in urban spaces, such as crowd flow data, traffic flow, air quality, weather data and social media data into unified spatial-temporal data types, and then optimize the management of those data utilizing multiple specially designed spatial-temporal indexes. Zheng gave an example of how these techniques help with detecting parking violations by mining the massive trajectory data of shared bicycles.

City Operation Systems Enables Future Intelligent Cities

When talking about the layer of data-driven analysis in cities, Zheng emphasized that the structure of spatio-temporal data is different from simple text and image data. A photo is static in size and is not time varying, however, the trajectory of a vehicle is constantly changing, and two points in the trajectory cannot be exchanged. Using regional crowd flow forecasting problem as an example, a large event occur, new AI models developed by JD Intelligent City Research can accurately predict the human crowd or traffic flow in time period. This has significant value to urban administrative authorities.

The analysis of spatio-temporal data is not accurate enough without synergizing with the big data from different sectors. In a mega city, for instance, air quality might be quite different across different areas even at the same time. Zheng believes that to forecast the air quality of a location in a city, we have to fuse the information in the data from many fields, such as weather, traffic, people movement, points of interest, traffic network, historical air quality data and real-time air quality reports, and domain knowledge in meteorology and environmental science, in order to produce an effective prediction model.

For aspect of providing services in urban computing, he used the urban computing platform as an example. ‘An urban computing platform, just like the IOS, can build a city-level ‘operating system’ for a smart city,’ he said. ‘It’s aimed to assist municipal administrations in tackling data problems in sectors like transportation, planning, environmental protection, energy, urban credit, public security and e-government, and enable partners in various industries with AI algorithms to build an ecosystem for intelligent city development.’

AI Development Needs Data Scientists

Zheng particularly stressed the importance of data scientists. In his opinion, it’s impossible to solve urban problems without the contributions of interdisciplinary talents on artificial intelligence who can discover the rules behind data and also apply algorithm models into various sectors.

Unanimous AI teams up with Leading Agency to Predict Which Companies Will Win the Super Bowl

SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 2, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Unanimous AI created Swarm, the worlds first AI platform that amplifies the intelligence of business teams. This breakthrough technology has been used to improve diagnostic accuracy, financial market forecasting, and provide insight into a wide variety of complex problems. In 2018, Unanimous correctly forecasted the Doritos/Mt. Dew collaboration featuring Peter Dinklage and Morgan Freeman to win Super Bowl Sunday as “Most Talked About” advertisement.

In the run-up to Super Bowl LIII, Unanimous AI used its award winning Swarm platform to harness the combined intelligence of a lead agency and more than 100 strategists across North America to produce an AI-optimized forecast for the potential effectiveness of the 2019 Super Bowl commercials.

Out of the analyzed commercials, the study predicted Expensify, Pringles and Doritos to be some of the most talked-about Super Bowl ads for 2019.

Modeled after swarms in nature, Swarm technology combines the wisdom, intuition and intelligence of human populations with AI algorithms to create optimized insights. Unanimous AI delivers these insights to Fortune 500 companies for a range of applications, from forecasting sales to optimizing marketing campaigns.

For the Super Bowl advertising study, researchers used a special framework inspired by Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management ADPLAN rating system. The system was used to compare the effectiveness of advertisements that will be shown during the Super Bowl, assessing them on six criteria (attention, distinction, positioning, linkage, amplification and net equity) to determine their overall success.

The iterative process of ranking and sorting the advertisements culminated in a showdown between the Doritos “#NowItsHot” and Pringles “Sad Device” 30-second spots. In the end, the Doritos collaboration between Chance the Rapper and the Backstreet Boys was given the highest grade of the day, and deemed the most likely to generate post-game “buzz.”

“Swarm from Unanimous AI is the kind of tool marketers didn’t know they needed until they used it,” said one user. “After watching nearly 10 different Super Bowl ads, I was surprised over and over again by the results of the swarm. Tons of different use cases came to mind where Swarm AI technology would be beneficial, providing interesting insight into pressing questions. I’m curious to see how our group’s results measure up to the outcome on Sunday. Will our vast knowledge of the industry align with the unbiased opinions of the general public? We will have to wait and see.”

“We’ve seen our technology generate remarkable insight into complex problems of all kinds, but there’s no bigger stage than the Super Bowl, and no more important day for advertisers than Super Bowl Sunday,” said Dr. Louis Rosenberg, CEO of Unanimous AI. “It’s exciting to have some of the brightest minds in the field get together inside the Swarm platform to generate optimized forecasts about which of these ads will emerge victorious.”

Team Gleason Adds "My-Own-Voice" by the Acapela Group to Synthetic Voice Options for People Living With ALS

NEW ORLEANS, Feb. 1, 2019 /PRNewswire/ — Team Gleason is proud to add another powerful option to its toolkit of technology solutions for people living with ALS. My-Own-Voice is a voice banking option that captures the essence of a person’s voice before they lose it due to ALS or other degenerative diseases.

Steve Gleason had the opportunity to create his own synthetic voice through the process of voice banking when he was first diagnosed with ALS in 2011. It has been one of Steve and Team Gleason’s missions to help others maintain their unique voices through voice banking. Since launching its voice banking program, Team Gleason has provided hundreds of voices to the ALS community. Through this exciting partnership, the group’s goal is to help empower even more people to create their own unique voice.

Launched 4 years ago by the Acapela Group, My-Own-Voice offers people the opportunity to preserve a person’s voice identity, even if their voice is damaged and low energy levels make recording difficult. The digital voice can be used with an assistive device to read any sentence, keeping the essence of the original in terms of timbre, accent, and intonation. Their individual voice and way of speaking are instantly recognizable.

“I often say, until there is a medical cure, technology will be that cure. Stated another way, most of what ALS takes away, technology can give back,” says Steve Gleason. He added, “losing my voice was by far, one of the most difficult things to process. Having “banked” my physical voice made it dramatically easier to adjust. I am proud Team Gleason is adding another solution for people living with ALS.”

“We are very proud to be part of the Team Gleason’s product shortlist. This rewards our work and reinforces our will to keep giving a voice to everyone,” said Nicolas Mazars, Manager of Acapela Inclusive. “Our voice banking solution is only turning 4, but has already spanned a long journey. Since the launch in March 2015, hundreds of voices have been created. In 2018, more than 200 patients enrolled in the program and this number is constantly increasing thanks to our partnership with several VA centers in the USA, Nav (Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration), as well as the precious support of John Costello at Boston Children’s Hospital,” he continued. “Our new partnership with Team Gleason is a major milestone for us and we are looking forward to helping more and more people living with ALS keep their voice personas.”

Innovation: Your digital voice based on DNN technology

Progress in voice technology and Artificial intelligence signifies that patients with speech impairments can now benefit from improved message or voice banking; the resulting voices are very similar to their own. A voice signal and persona can be created from scratch, based on only a few minutes of speech recordings.

DNN (Deep Neural Networks) have revolutionized artificial vision and automatic speech recognition. This machine learning revolution is keeping its promises as it enters the digital voice arena. It is leading to better performance, more intelligibility and consistency. With Acapela DNN, we can now create a digital version of a person’s voice using only a few minutes of existing recordings (message banking) or new speech recordings (voice banking).

About Team Gleason:

Team Gleason Foundation is a 501c3 nonprofit based in New Orleans, LA. Team Gleason was founded by former New Orleans Saints player, Steve Gleason, after his diagnosis with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) in 2011. Team Gleason aims to provide individuals with ALS with leading edge technology, equipment and services, to create a global conversation about ALS, and to raise public awareness towards ALS by providing and documenting extraordinary life adventures for individuals with muscular diseases or injuries.

About Acapela Group

Acapela Group is a European leader of voice solutions with 30 years of expertise and market feedback, strong partnerships, deep rooted R&D, an enthusiastic team and a strong appetite for innovation. In order to meet a growing demand for specific voice solutions adapted to accessibility markets, Acapela Group created a division dedicated to inclusiveness with an initial specific focus on speech impairments, learning disabilities, visual impairments and for meeting the specific needs of seniors.
