Top 3 Growth Opportunities for Digital Pathology-enabling Technology Companies

Establishment of parallel workflows vital to gain regulatory approvals for the use of artificial intelligence capabilities in digital pathology, finds Frost & Sullivan

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Feb. 25, 2019 /PRNewswire/ — Over the next decade, there will be a shift in digital pathology and artificial intelligence (AI) applications from the pharmaceutical sector to clinical diagnostics. Once they are established as primary and secondary diagnostic tools, clinicians will be able to decrease turnaround time, prioritize critical cases, and improve overall patient outcomes. However, for AI tools to gain regulatory approval for primary diagnosis in digital pathology, it is imperative to adopt a parallel workflow to showcase the superior benefits of pathology diagnoses that amass data.

Top 3 Growth Opportunities for Digital Pathology-enabling Technology Companies

“AI has the potential to analyze big data and find patterns and insights that could enhance patient outcomes in the field of pathology,” said Deepak Jayakumar, Senior Research Analyst, TechVision. “It can serve as a supplementary or a validation tool in imaging analytics for pathologists and help process more slides in a shorter duration. So far, AI-based medical diagnostic tools like OsteoDetect have already been approved for use by the FDA for the detection of distal radius fracture. Furthermore, AI-powered tools can better identify skin lesions and the presence of invasive breast cancer.”

Frost & Sullivan’s recent analysis, Digital Pathology: Roadmap to the Future of Medical Diagnosis, covers the solutions of digital whole slide scanning, digital imaging solutions, and digital data repository. The study identifies technology advancements, applications, and potential, as well as presents the most successful business models and strategies currently dominating the market.

For further information on this analysis, please visit:

“Hospitals and diagnostic labs will be the largest adopters of digital pathology over the next decade,” noted Jayakumar. “Technology innovators can ensure greater commercialization by focusing on improving cost optimization for end users through pay-per-use or Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) models. Additionally, they could map service gaps, expand product portfolios, and use the information obtained from clinical data to develop cutting-edge solutions.”

A few highlighted growth opportunities for digital pathology-enabling technology companies within this analysis include:

  • Responsible use of datasets owned by medical institutions. A case in point is the creation of an imaging research warehouse by Mount Sinai Health System, which equips researchers with imaging and clinical data of more than a million patients.
  • Collaboration with hospitals, diagnostic labs, and medical institutes to generate datasets comparing digital pathology and traditional methods to present a solid case for the regulatory approval of their product.
  • Approval of AI-based tools needs to be a top priority for AI-based, digital pathology-focused companies as low-to-medium risk diagnostic avenues are an innovative way to transition from pharmaceutical to mainstream clinical applications in the digital pathology segment.

Smart Technology Marketing Revenues Surged 393% to $340 Million in 2018, Driven Primarily By Triple-Digit Growth in AI, AR and VR Marketing

STAMFORD, Conn., Feb. 25, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — U.S. smart technology marketing (STM) revenues surged 393.4% to $340.4 million in 2018, making STM by far the fastest-growing marketing segment in 2018, according to the first-ever benchmark on this small but burgeoning category from media industry economists PQ Media.

Overall STM revenues, which are broken down into five major categories – artificial intelligence, augmented reality, virtual reality, internet of things, and voice assistant marketing – are projected to grow at more than 100% for each of the next two years, topping $2 billion in 2020, according to PQ Media’s just-released U.S. Smart Technology Marketing Forecast 2019. While smart technology accounted for less than 1% of total US marketing expenditures in 2018, brand marketer investments are expected to reach $7.08 billion in 2023.

Artificial intelligence (AI) was the largest segment of smart technology marketing in 2018, representing two-thirds of the category’s overall investment by marketers, and it was the fastest-growing of all STM channels, rising 418% to $226.8 million last year. AI is the largest of the five STM channels due to the strength of major operators like IBM Watson working with major brands. AIM allows marketers to develop personalized messages over multiple media platforms, such as TV, digital and out-of-home media.

Augmented reality (AR) was the second largest and second-fastest growing STM channel, growing 400% to $75 million in 2018, according to the PQ Media. AR is generating strong growth rates because it is among the least expensive of the STM channels to produce marketing messages. Brand awareness of AR grew when marketers began partnering with Pokémon Go! and placing mobile beacons at retail stores.

“STM use has been growing substantially over the past three years as more brands become aware of its potential, with cost, ease of use, and turnaround time being key factors when they choose to employ one of the five STM channels,” said PQ Media President Patrick Quinn. “While some industry observers have called STM the ‘holy grail’ because of its ability to engage customers at the point of decision, key issues like standard measurement remain, as no standard ROI-type measurement has yet been developed.”

Virtual Reality (VR) ranked third in size among the five STM segments in 2018, and while it posted triple-digital gains it was the slowest growing of the major channel categories. VR head gear sales have been somewhat weak, making the projected reach of VR much lower than originally anticipated, as high costs to produce VR messages have weighed on this segment.

Voice Assistants was the fourth-fastest growing channel in 2018, as smart speakers only became available in late 2015 and growth decelerated sharply after Amazon and Google instituted standards that limited ads during daily briefings. Brands are using VA by developing so-called skills, like beauty hints, and incorporating sponsored content marketing podcasts.

Internet of Things (IoT) was the smallest of the STM channels due to very few appliances having the capability to provide effective marketing messages, though connected refrigerators with screens are being used to deploy messages, such as recipes using specific brands.

About the Report:

PQ Media’s U.S. Smart Technology Marketing Forecast 2019 is the first and only source of comprehensive, in-depth and consistent data and analysis of the five major STM channels, including artificial intelligence, augmented reality, internet of things, virtual reality and voice assistants. “Marketers today are overwhelmed by the amount of data at their disposal,” says Jeremy Haile, Co-Founder and CEO, Sideqik. “The challenge is using that data to make decisions and improving how they engage with their customers and the influencers that speak to them. As consumer attention shifts more and more to mobile and social, it’s increasingly important that brands are able to engage with them there, and it’s our mission to provide an innovative platform that helps them do that in an intelligent, authentic, and measurable way.”

Looking to the future, Sideqik will continue innovating through its products by using its AI-driven intelligence to help brands better understand their market, competition, and consumers — informed by more than sixteen million online profiles and over two billion social posts. Sideqik will also be adding their first predictive analytics capabilities, allowing marketers to better understand the trends driving their brands, influencers, and marketplace.

Sideqik plans to use this investment to add over 60 employees across their Atlanta headquarters, Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Europe, and continue providing a top-notch level of service to their growing enterprise customer base.

Sideqik serves the largest and most innovative brands in the world – Coca-Cola, Universal Music, Procter & Gamble, Under Armour, Turner, and Home Depot– who use Sideqik to better engage with their customers and the social influencers in their industry.

“Social engagement and influencer marketing have emerged as the fastest growing segment of the marketing technology stack,” said Greg Gretsch, founding partner and managing director, Jackson Square Ventures. “We’re excited to partner with Sideqik on their mission to help companies adapt to this connected world we live in, and to engage with their customers in a better, more authentic, and more engaging way.”
